What is a Doula?
The term Doula was first coined by the breastfeeding campaigner, Dana Raphael, in 1973, to describe someone who provides physical, mental and spiritual support for women after childbirth. Her comments were made in an article where she talked about the increased number of mothers who were successfully breastfeeding their babies after receiving this kind of support. The word 'Doula' has since come to mean the comforting presence of a trusted supporter, and advocate, during childbirth as well as assisting the postpartum period. More recently, this role has developed into a vocational profession in which women are serving the community as Doulas globally.
A 21st-century Doula's job is to support women and their families during pregnancy, birth and after the baby has been born. A Doula will be there every step of the way to provide emotional support, information and practical advice. When you hire a Doula you develop a strong relationship that enables her to meet your specific and unique needs. A Doula is able to work with you, helping you plan and prepare for the birth of your baby, and for the precious bonding weeks afterward. A BirthWorks Doula will listen to, respect, and advocate for you and will be there as a trusted professional and friend.
